Small Plant Sprouting | Bioheat Norwalk | Bioheat Westport

The Devine Bros. Bioheat Story

Back in 2004, Devine Bros. introduced bioheat to the Connecticut market. As true innovators and pioneers of alternative energy, we wanted to offer a way for our customers to reduce their emissions without having to spend extra money on their heating bill or make adjustments to their home’s current heating system.

Our bioheat fuel is made by blending biodiesel with conventional heating oil. Biodiesel is created when any fat or oil, such as soybean oil, goes through a refinery process called transesterfication. During this process, the oil reacts with an alcohol in order to remove glycerin.

Biodiesel is a natural solvent, so it actually cleans as it moves through your home’s heating system. Biodiesel is also the only alternative fuel source that has fully completed the Clean Air Act’s testing requirements. Studies have shown that using biodiesel in a standard home oil burner actually resulted in significantly reduced emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, and other particulate matter.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gasses – which are a main cause of global warming – the use of American-made bioheat also lessened our reliance on foreign oil imports. The potential impact of this alternate fuel source has brought national attention to our family-owned business; we have been featured on the CBS Early Show, News 12, Bloomberg Radio, the Connecticut Post, and more!

How to Clean Your Brick Patio: Step-By-Step Instructions

For those of us who are lucky enough to have a backyard patio, you know how much of a luxury they are. They provide a place to enjoy the warm weather and soak up the sun, and they can also add visual appeal to your landscaping.

Many homeowners prefer brick patios instead of concrete because they are a more attractive option. While it certainly does have its benefits, they do have a big downside: maintenance.

Keeping your brick patio looking like new takes a little bit of time, but it doesn’t have to take a whole lot of effort. Just clean it every two months using these step-by-step instructions.

  1. Remove all furniture from the patio.

  2. Eliminate all weeds growing in the cracks by pulling them from the base to ensure they don’t quickly grow back. If you can’t access the base of the weed, use a chemical weed killer.

  3. Sweep away all leaves, grass, dirt, and other loose debris.

  4. Using a stiff-bristled brush, remove any visible stains from the patio. You can use a one-part bleach to ten-parts water cleaning solution to do this.

  5. After scrubbing away your stains, rinse the patio with a garden hose and allow to dry.

  6. If there are still unsightly stains, head to your local hardware store and purchase a stain remover. Make sure to by the one specially made for your surface type: stone, brick, flagstone, pavers, etc.

  7. Consider applying a masonry-grade sealcoat to your patio to help preserve its look and durability for years to come.

Sometimes, years and years of no maintenance will lead to the premature deterioration of your patio. If this happens to you, there is no amount of cleaning that will restore its brand-new look; your only option is to reinstall it. If you live in Norwalk, Connecticut or the surrounding area and are looking for high-quality masonry supplies at a reasonable price, look no further than Devine Bros. Landscaped Yard Leading Up to Nice House | Landscape Supplies Norwalk

5 Tips for Designing Your Landscape

If it is your first time consciously thinking about your home’s landscaping, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the design and plant options available to you. If the process is stressing you out, take a few deep breaths and read the five tips below.

  • Do your research. The first step of designing your new landscape is to do a little bit of homework. Research your climate and learn what plantlife thrives in your temperature and soil conditions. It is also important to get an idea of how much things cost; many homeowners don’t realize how expensive landscaping can be.

  • Make a budget. After you have done a little bit of research, you will want to make a budget. Allocate a specific amount of money to your landscaping project, and force yourself to stay under this number. Having a budget before you begin shopping will help prevent you from overspending.

  • Separate needs from wants. After you designate a budget for yourself, you may quickly realize that you can’t afford to have everything you want; which is why you need to figure out what your needs are. Do you really need that expensive shrubbery, or is it more of a want? A fence to keep animals out, on the other hand, may be more of a priority.

  • Shop around. As with anything that is more than a couple of dollars, you should shop around in order to get the best bang for your buck. Visit local hardware outlets, specialty gardening shops, and even look at online retailers – you will probably find that they have a wider selection than any stores around you.

  • Separate plants by watering needs. No one wants to spend their hard-earned money on vegetation, only to have it die by the end of the season. Grouping your plants together based on their water needs can help prevent under/overwatering.

5 Ways to Cut Your Cooling Costs this Summer

iStock_000018022234_Medium

During the summer months, one of the biggest concern of homeowners is their rising utility bill. Keeping your house cool doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, and you don’t have to sacrifice your family’s comfort in order to save money.

Check out these 5 ways to cut your cooling your cooling costs this summer:

1. Get a Programmable Thermostat

Investing in a programmable thermostat costs a little money up front, but they quickly pay for themselves with the year-round energy savings they offer. Set your cooling system to automatically use less energy by keeping the house a few degrees warmer while everyone is sleeping or away at work.

2. Change Your Air Filter

Air conditioners have filters which need to be cleaned or replaced every so often. If neglected for too long, these dirty filters can restrict air flow and put extra wear-and-tear on your system. How often you need to change yours depends on the size and type of filter, so refer to your owners manual for specific instructions for your model.

3. Upgrade Your Insulation

If your home isn’t properly insulated, your money could be going out the window – literally. Cold air can escape your house through your doors, walls, windows, ceilings, and even floor. Maximize your energy-efficiency by sealing all of your home’s air leaks and following these insulation recommendations.

4. Supplement With Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are for more than just looks; they can actually be a functioning part of your HVAC system. Set the blades on your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise during the summer; this will force air downward on the room and create a wind chill effect, helping your house feel 2-3 degrees cooler at all times!

5. Have Your A/C Unit Tuned Up

A poorly-maintained air conditioner can use up to 30% more energy than one which has been properly cared for. Having your cooling system tuned up each year by a professional technician will do more than just lower your energy bills; it can also help prevent future breakdowns and allow your unit to last longer.

Do you live in southwestern Connecticut? Count on Devine Bros. to tune up your air conditioner this summer! Our 16-point cooling system tune up includes cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting all of the components necessary to keep your A/C running efficiently for a long time. Switch to Devine Bros. Electricity and Save!

Connecticut has a deregulated energy market!

What does this mean for you, the consumer? It means you can choose where you get your energy from, which can lead to significant savings!

Connecticut is one of fifteen states across the country to have a deregulated energy market. Before deregulation, residents could only choose from two power providers; CL&P and UI. With this oligopolistic marketplace, providers are able to set the price as high as they please with no fear of competitors offering lower rates.

However, home and business owners in Connecticut no longer have to worry about this, as deregulation of the market has provided small power companies an opportunity to compete with the energy giants. When you choose Devine Bros. with Verde Energy USA, you can save a significant amount of money every month on your utility bill.

Look at our rates compared to other providers:

UI Residential: $0.1331/KWH

CL&P Residential: $0.1263/KWH

Devine Bros: $0.1149/KWH

Doesn’t sound like much of a difference? Consider that many Connecticut homes use more than 2,000 kilowatt hours every month, and businesses could use up to ten times that amount!

Here are five reasons to switch to Devine Bros. today:

  • Lower Rates. Our low rates can help you save up to 15% on the supply portion of your electricity bill.

  • Reliable Service. Your electricity will still be delivered on the same power grid – no changes in in response time or service.

5 Benefits of an A/C Tune Up

iStock_000008938718_Large

August is here, and temperatures are still scorching in southwestern Connecticut. After a July that saw several days reach the high-80s and beyond, the sweltering summer heat shows no signs of cooling off anytime soon.

With the increased workload that these high temperatures place on your air conditioner, why don’t you take time to do something good for it. An A/C tune up from the cooling professionals at Devine Bros is just what your central air system needs to keep running efficiently for many summers to come.

Here are five benefits of our 16-Point Air Conditioning Tune Up:

Reduce Energy Consumption
During your tune up, our technicians will thoroughly clean and lubricate several of your air conditioner’s components. A clean A/C is an efficient A/C, and you will notice the difference every month when you open your utility bill.

Improve Comfort
When your air conditioner is clogged with dirt and debris, it hinders its airflow and the ability to keep your house at a comfortable temperature. A professional tune up can help improve your A/C’s peak performance, allowing it to keep your house cool on even the hottest of days.

Extend Lifespan
An annual tune up can reduce daily wear-and-tear on your cooling system and help prevent it from premature failure.

Prevent Future Breakdowns
Our professionally-trained technicians will closely inspect every component of your air conditioner and be on the lookout for warning signs of a potential breakdown. Often times, we can reduce your risk of a breakdown or even prevent it altogether!

Maintain Unit’s Warranty
Many air conditioner manufacturers specify in the owner’s manual that their systems need to be professionally inspected every year. Failure to do so could even void their warranty. Be safe and keep your warranty in tact with a tune up from Devine Bros.

If you are in need of a tune up for your air conditioner, look no further than Devine Brothers of Norwalk. Since 1918, homeowners across southwestern Connecticut have depended on us for their heating, cooling, and energy needs.
